what Dudley does
Dudley Does Right will help any Canadian turn the money each of us spends into votes for a better world. It can appeal to the great majority of Canadians simply because it will focus on products in places we already shop: Canadian Tire, Loblaws, Rexall, Wallmart, HBC, Wayfair, Amazon and such — as well as introduce them to the special offerings of Canada’s thousands of conscientious independent businesses.
Down the road it can become a Canadian Tire or Wayfair.ca-style web catalogue of practical goodwill. Users can click to sections like home repair, food, household goods, outdoor living, automotive, technology, fashion, financial, etc. all with solid journalism, background research, user reviews and comments. It will also feature citizen reporting and retailer and manufacturer profiles.
It might eventually employ software that, on the model of hotel and travel sites, scans the internet for deals, new ideas and notable new ethical products.
It might generate personal shopping lists and retain customer profiles and wish-lists for updates and notifications about local sales, etc. It might even provide a bar-code scanner app that takes a shopper standing in the aisle and facing the product to that product’s place among our discussions and evaluations.
Dudley Does Right won’t sell any products itself, at least at first, but will link to sites that do. That too might generate a modest income stream.
Most importantly, Dudley Does Right will sell advertising. Some of it might be screen space where advertisers can FTP and upload notices of their own specials, new products and price lists whenever they want. We’ll sell classified ads too. The income will help pay professional staff and reporters, and provide funding for ongoing projects.
